The Centre conducts extensive scientific research and educational activities in humane animal protection, species protection of animals, and nature conservation (in connection with animal protection). We are interested in the status of non-human animals – their subjectivity, welfare, and rights – as well as animal preservation and biodiversity protection. We also deal with the protection of ecosystems, from the protection of natural heritage through habitat protection to the rights of nature. We address these issues both within the framework of legal dogmatics and legal theory.
Thus, we operate in animal law, i.e., laws relating to animals — regardless of how these regulations refer to animals or what area of law they are assigned to. We propose using the term “animal law,” as Polish lawyers and philosophers did a hundred years ago and as foreign-language authors and activists do today (e.g., animal law in English).
The Centre was established in 2024 and operates at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Warsaw (Poland). Its members are also members of the Faculty. Their details are in the Members tab.
